Largest option buying in equities so far

Nearing the halfway mark in today’s session, here are the individual equity names with the most call and put buying on optionMONSTER’s ActionTracker data system.

Qualcomm (QCOM): An investor bought some 8,968 August 65 calls for $ 1.28 and sold a matching number of August 57.50 puts for $ 0.98. The trade cost $ 0.30 and is leveraged to upside in the chip maker. QCOM fell 1.89 percent to $ 61.78. (See related story )

Bank of America (BAC): Almost 20,000 13.50 weekly calls expiring next Friday were purchased, mostly for $ 0.09 to $ 0.11, as investors positioned for a short-term rally in the financial giant. BAC rose 0.68 percent to $ 13.29.

Wells Fargo (WFC): Some 8,200 June 38 puts were bought, mostly for $ 0.06, but volume was below open interest at the strike. WFC rose 1.36 percent to $ 41.28.

Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is heavy as more than 9 million contracts have traded so far today, with major indexes and ETFs leading the way, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 2 million options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 415,000 as puts just outpace calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 382,000 contracts changing hands, with 221,000 puts.

Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) with 375,000 options, led by 276,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 356,000 contracts trade, with 223,000 puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 233,000 options moving as puts slightly outnumber calls. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has volume of 152,000, evenly split between calls and puts. Following closely is the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) with 140,000 options, with puts outpacing calls by 3 to 1.

Total option volume is 5.6 million so far today, with the typical indexes and ETFs dominating the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 998,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. Next up is the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) with 342,000 contracts, led by 216,000 puts, which is rare. Following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options with 267,000 options as calls slightly outpace puts.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 236,000 contracts change hands, with puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 136,000 options traded, with calls just outpacing puts.

Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 135,000 options, also with calls outpacing puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) just breaks 100,000 contracts, with slightly more calls.

More than 1.6 million SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) options have traded, with puts slightly outpacing calls. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 480,000, evenly split between calls and puts.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 196,000 contracts changing hands, with a put/call ratio of almost 3 to 1. Just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options at 192,000, with 111,000 calls.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 116,000 options turn over, led by 86,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 102,000 options traded, with 58,000 puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 87,000 options moving, with 47,000 puts.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 1.6 million options traded, with puts slightly outpacing calls. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options follow with 583,000, though calls make up most of that volume at 324,000, which is very unusual.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 362,000 contracts trade, with 235,000 puts. Following is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) with volume of 297,000, led by 173,000 calls.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 180,000 options changing hands, with 95,000 calls. Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) options at 160,000, with 100,000 puts.
